" China's second largest e-commerce giant JD said it has increased its investment to become one of the biggest shareholders in Vietnam-headquartered e-commerce platform Sonny Gray Jersey , Tiki.vn, as part of its overseas expansion initiatives.
JD and another existing shareholder, VNG Corporation, both participated in the latest fund-raising for Tiki, while its previous investors include Japanese investors Sumitomo Corporation and CyberAgent Ventures.
This follows JD's US$44 million investment in the platform in November last year.
Tiki was founded in 2010 and started out as an online book seller, but has since diversified to include more physical goods such as toys, digital devices, lifestyle and beauty products.
""JD will push forward collaboration with VNG in terms of social network and mobile payments, and we'll continue to share with Tiki our experience in pushing forward social commerce,"" said Winston Cheng, president of JD's international business.
“With JD’s expertise in leveraging social media for e-commerce, Tiki.vn’s partnership with VNG in social network and mobile payments is a natural fit,” he said in the statement.
JD will also leverage off Tiki's warehousing and delivery systems, as well as its technology and payment capabilities.
JD aims to build more solid ground for its long-term expansion in overseas markets following its launch of a local online retail business in Indonesia in 2015. The e-commerce giant has been pushing forward tie-ups with domestic and overseas partners, and deals with Farfetch and Vipshop in the past year testifies its ambition to broaden product and service offerings to catch up with leader Alibaba.
E-commerce giants are ambitious in their Southeast Asian expansion plans. Alibaba has invested heavily in payment and e-commerce ventures in Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Alibaba-backed Lazada also has a strong presence in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, while Amazon launched its subscription member service in Singapore.

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Minister of Justice Zhang Jun has underscored the importance of the Communist Party of China (CPC) leadership of lawyers, calling it the ""soul of the country's legal system.""
Zhang's remarks were made at a recent forum for lawyers and published in Friday's edition of the People's Daily, the flagship newspaper of the CPC.
Strengthening Party leadership of the work of lawyers is by no means just a slogan, nor a matter of expediency, Zhang said, adding that it fully accords with the national conditions and is an arrangement of the political system concerning the long-term development of the role of lawyers.
Zhang said the 19th CPC National Congress set the direction for reform and development of the role of lawyers. The report adopted at the congress stated that ""the Party exercises overall leadership over all areas of endeavor in every part of the country.""
The minister asked lawyers to closely study the report and thoroughly understand it.
Zhang said that Party leadership is the most fundamental nature of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the basic guarantee for socialist rule of law.
In this regard, strengthening Party building among lawyers is ""the core part and fundamental measure"" in deepening reform of the legal system, the minister said.
If this issue cannot be resolved, it will be inevitable that lawyers are influenced by Western legal systems, he said.
""We must adhere to Party leadership so as to develop the role of lawyers and strengthen self discipline among lawyers,"" Zhang said.
In August 2017, China had more than 330,000 lawyers and over 26,000 law firms.

MANILA, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Philippine President Benigno Aquino III said he will aggressively push for the enactment of the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) in Congress as peace panels resume discussions on the draft measure on Friday.
Aquino said in a statement that it is his "obligation" to the people who are yearning for peace in southern Philippines.
"I want to be able to push this with conviction. Let's approach this with an open mind, see if everything is consistent with the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) and limit potential challenges," he said during a meeting with the Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC).
The meeting with the BTC came on the heels of reports that " significant points of differences" continued during this week's meeting of the peace panels of the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on the recommendations of Aquino's legal team to the draft BBL.
MILF, the largest Muslim separatist group, said Wednesday in an editorial posted on its website that it will not accept a "watered- down" version of the draft measure.
"The MILF is stretching the protocols of the engagement in order to catch up with commitment and come up with (an) agreed version of the BBL," the group said.
The group said that the government peace panel wanted the MILF to accept a version of the BBL that may be constitutional but will not solve "the Bangsamoro Question."
"The current government proposals will not restore dignity to a people who suffered tyranny and will not secure a peaceful and prosperous future," the editorial read.
The BTC, which was created to draft the Bangsamoro law, submitted its proposed bill to the Office of the President on April 22 for review. The Office of the President returned the draft last month with comments for review by the BTC.
The two panels then met in Kuala Lumpur for five days in early July and another four days in Manila recently to thresh out their differences.
