(XinhuaBai Xuefei) The 2014 FINA Diving World Series Beijing stop culminated Sunday with China's Cao Yuan and Qiu Bo winning the gold and silver medals in the men's 10-meter platform at the Water Cube.
Cao claimed 579.45 points while the 2012 Olympic silver medalist Qiu amassed 534.05 points. Britain's Tom Daley finished in third place with 525.05 points. David Boudia of the US, who won gold at the London Games, finished last in the six-man final with 473.60 points.
Team China won seven of the eight events except for Evgeny Kuznetsov and Illya Zakharov securing gold in the men's 3-meter synchronized springboard for Russia on Friday.
Team leader Zhou Jihong said that the national team suffered a "hard time" despite dominating in the event.
"It is long since we began the winter training. Our divers were slow-starting in the event," Zhou told reporters after the men's 10-meter platform final, before adding "injuries aggravated the situation."
Qiu, who won gold at last year's World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, ruined his gold medal hope after his last jump which scored only 74.10 points, but 19-year-old Cao said it was Qiu who inspired his win.
"I learned a lot from Qiu. He took this event as a chance to practice the more difficult actions," Cao said. "He just recovered from an injury. I admire his courage."
Qiu indicated that he will not try other dives before becoming adept at his current repertoire.
"I think my dives are the hardest. I'm reaching the peak. I will not try the other higher-difficulty dives before getting used to current ones," Qiu told the Global Times.
"It was a low point for me. I hope I can get back on the track as soon as possible."
Bronze medalist Daley paid tribute to Cao by saying Cao has the potential to be "the next world No.1" before saying that his life became easier after revealing last year he is in a relationship with a man.
"To be honest, it doesn't make a -difference, I am still who I am, I'm still diving ... It's nice to know there is always someone supporting me back home," Daley said.
