Finally, with 10 seconds remaining, Doug Collins stole a pass, went in for a layup and was fouled. He made both free throws to give Team USA a 50-49 lead. Then came a series of bizarre events.After the Soviets inbounded the ball and moved upcourt, officials stopped the game with one second left. The Soviets said they had tried to call a timeout earlier and that the officials missed it. So officials put the clock to three seconds and gave the Soviets the ball to inbound.
