The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the GameAmir Garrett came to Goodyear on a mission, it would appear. When the initial talk from manager Bryan Price about the candidates for the fifth spot in the Cincinnati Reds starting rotation didn include his name - and did include a half-dozen other names - he might well have used that as fuel for his fire, since he been nothing short of spectacular in his two outings in Cactus League play. On Friday against the San Francisco Giants, Garrett struck out all of them. All of the Giants. Every single Giant hitter that came to the plate through Garrett first 2 IP struck out https://www.redsapprel.com/Cincinnati_Reds-4, and if my ears’ ability to follow the radio feed is still up to par, I fairly certain he rarely even allowed weak contact on foul balls. He appeared slightly more mortal in his 3rd inning of work - in part due to a baserunner who reached on an error - but still, 3 IP of hitless, 6 K ball from him was impressive as heck. In fact, the only way it coulde possibly been more impressive is if it was actually on TV for us to see.Though his work today came in relief, I have to wager that Garrett has put his name firmly back into the discussion for a spot in the rotation come Opening Day, as he easily been the most impressive arm in camp to date. I be shocked if he doesn get a start in the coming week.Honorable Mentions are due to Devin Mesoraco, who went 2 for 3 with a double and a ribbie; Jesse Winker, who doubled, drove in a run, and scored; Darnell Sweeney, who poked a ground-rule double and scored; and Raisel Iglesias, who K a Giant in his perfect inning of relief.Key PlaysMadison Bumgarner got the start for the Giants, and he promptly threw perfect ball through the first 3 innings, with 4 Ks. Meanwhile, Homer Bailey was on the mound for the Reds, and he was touched up for solo dingers by both Kyle Jensen (Bottom of the 2nd) and Steven Duggar (Bottom of the 3rd). Reds trailed, 2-0.It took until the Top of the 6th for the Reds to finally make their mark, but they did so against reliever Roberto Gomez. Jose Peraza coaxed a 2-out walk, and he scored a batter later on Winker double off the LF wall. Mesoraco then stroked a single into LF that brought in Winker, and the game was tied, 2-2.Sweeney double came with 2-out in the Top of the 9th off Jose Valdez, and it was backed by an RBI single off the bat of Phil Ervin that put the Reds ahead, 3-2. After that, Zack Weiss sat the Giants down quietly, and the Reds took home the W.Graph of All the Hitting the Giants Did Against Amir Garrett(There is no graph. That the joke.)Other NotesHomer Bailey second outing of the spring didn go nearly as well has his first. He did get through 3 full innings, which is nice https://www.redsapprel.com/Reds_Austin_Brice_Jersey-251, but he allowed 2 ER on those 2 dingers, struck out 1, and just fcking walked a guy. Still, he was largely around the plate and it sounded as if his velocity was just fine. It sounds as if Dilson Herrera surgically repaired shoulder is a bit inflamed, and he going to rest it for a day or two. Hat tip to Doug Gray, who noticed that news earlier today.Luis Castillo will take the mound for the Reds on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs Johnny Bench Jersey. He, too, will be getting his second start of camp, and will hope to pitch as well as he did against the other team from Chicago last weekend. That game at Sloan Park in Mesa, and will start at 305 PM ET. Once again there will be no TV coverage, which is a trend that increasingly beginning to suck.Tunes.
