DOHA, Qatar -- Ninth-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia advanced to the second round of the Qatar Open on Tuesday after Slovakias Daniela Hantuchova retired from their match with a right knee injury. Ivanovic was leading 7-5, 1-0 when Hantuchova withdrew after falling 0-40 behind in the second game. The match started slowly for Ivanovic, who surrendered her first two serves as Hantuchova took a 5-3 lead. But Ivanovic won the next four games to secure the set, winning the ninth game at love with her final three serves being aces. "She started really well, and I managed to get back into the set and break her back," Ivanovic said. "I played some really good tennis towards the end of that first set and then in the second." Wildcard entrant Alisa Kleybanova of Russia also advanced after her opponent retired. At 5-5 in the first set, 10th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovak Republic, the recent Australian Open finalist, retired from the match with a gastrointestinal illness. "I was really looking forward to playing this week in Doha," said Cibulkova, who was making her first tournament appearance since becoming the first Slovakian to reach a Grand Slam final. "Unfortunately I became very sick today and suddenly did not feel well. I wanted to give it a try today and I did everything I could to try to play, but I could not continue." Karin Knapp, who led Italy to a 3-1 Fed Cup victory over the United States in Cleveland at the weekend, was told she had to be in Doha to play a first round match on Tuesday. Knapp started her journey early Monday morning and after going from Cleveland to Washington DC, and then to Dubai, she landed in Doha on Tuesday in time to play her afternoon match. Knapp played impressive tennis to defeat Caroline Garcia of France 6-4, 6-1 straight off the plane. Four players who chose to skip playing the Fed Cup tie between the U.S. and Italy in order to get to Doha early -- Sloane Stephens, Francesca Schiavone, Roberta Vinci and Flavia Pennetta -- have all lost their first round matches. Elsewhere, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands upset 15th-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, a recent Australian Open semifinalist, 7-5, 6-1. Dwayne Allen Jersey . Late in the game, the St. Louis goalie craned his neck into the air to block a shot, taking a puck square in the mask. http://www.patriotsjerseysauthentic.com/...wl-Jersey/.FIFA says it is relaxing the rule which forced match officials to leave its international list at the end of the year they turned 45. Joe Thuney Jersey . "I had a pretty good year," the soft-spoken Granberg told TSN.ca with a grin from the teams annual rookie tournament in London. A fourth-round selection in 2010, Granberg is worth keeping an eye on with NHL training camps rolling around in less than a week. The six-foot-two, 200-pound defender may not possess the wow-inspiring theatrics of fellow prospect Morgan Rielly, but nonetheless has a chance to contribute with the Leafs when all is said and done this season. A suspension was hanging over forward Shawn Thornton, after his meltdown in Saturday nights 3-2 win over Pittsburgh sent Penguins defenceman Brooks Orpik to hospital. Thonton, enraged at seeing several teammates injured in the game at TD Garden, is suspended pending an in-person disciplinary hearing. "Last night was a tough night, Ill be honest with you," Boston coach Claude Julien said before Sunday nights game in Toronto. "Because we dont like to see what happened. Its unfortunate. The incidents were very unfortunate." Forwards Loui Eriksson and Chris Kelly were both injured in the Pittsburgh game. Eriksson sustained a concussion after being hit by Orpik and did not travel to Toronto for the start of the Bruins four-game road trip. Kelly was placed on long-term injured reserve after breaking his right fibula against Pittsburgh. Bergeron said he had texted Eriksson, hearing back Sunday morning abut his teammate "not feeling great but its still early so hopefully he takes the time and its going to go away soon." Julien said he "respectfully" disagreed with Penguins coach Dan Bylsma that Orpiks hit was a "good hard hit." "Eriksson touches the puck," Bylsma said. "He didnt have the puck," countered Julien. "In watching the replays, I thought Brooks was just kind of lining him up. No matter what, he was going to line up the hit more than even attempt to play the puck. Maybe people will argue that it touched his blade but it certainly wasnt from him (Eriksson) trying to take a pass.dddddddddddd. It took a weird bounce off the boards." Julien said he will accept what the league decides and happily move on. As for Thorntons actions, Julien said his player will take his medicine. Thornton himself said he felt awful after the game. "I agree, he did cross the line," Julien said. "He got caught in the emotions. Theres nobody thats proud of what happened last night. Absolutely not. So hes going to suffer the consequences and so will we. "But the one thing about Thorny is that anybody who knows him personally knows hes a pretty honest player and a pretty honest person and if he said he really regretted it and felt bad, he really did. And I support his comment because I know hes being truthful. "Thats more than we can say about players that pretend it wasnt done on purpose or (they) really didnt mean it. Yet its pretty obvious when you look at it. Thorny did cross the line and some others did too. But sometimes you have to man up to those things and I think he did." Pittsburghs James Neal was assessed a kneeing penalty for a hit on Brad Marchand that preceded Thorntons sucker-punch attack on Orpik. Neal said later there was no attempt to injure. Orpik was stretchered off the ice and taken to hospital but was later released. The Bruins recalled forwards Ryan Spooner and Matt Fraser from the Providence Bruins on an emergency basis. Defenceman Adam McQuaid, sidelined by a lower-body injury, has also been placed on injured reserve. Defenceman Johnny Boychuk is also out with a back sprain, suffered on a hit in Montreal.
